The Boss Baby Free Advance Screening this Saturday at Showplace ICON

Get a chance to THE BOSS BABY before it hits theaters with a free advance screening this Saturday, March 18 at Showplace ICON (West End) at 10am. Download a family four-pack of passes (while supplies last):

Please note: seats are awarded on a first come, first served basis and are not guaranteed. Arrive early!

DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby. The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages.

2017 Minnesota City Wide Garage Sales List

I have had SO MANY emails and Facebook messages for the last few weeks asking about our annual list of Minnesota City-Wide Garage Sales that I figured it was time that I better get it started. This year marks the SEVENTH annual listing of city-wide, town-wide and neighborhood sales throughout the state of Minnesota! We greatly appreciate all of the people and organizations who come forward to provide us with information each year to help us put together this list.  It is a huge project that takes many hours of work! I’m happy to see so many people using the list and am honored by all your kind comments about it.

All of the sales below are those that I have been able to confirm the dates either via the city hosting the event, a local resident or a reader with information about the sale. NOTE: This is a work in progress. If you know of any confirmed sale dates that I have not yet listed, please let me know by leaving a comment here or e-mail me and I will get it added to the list.

Please help support this list by “liking” us on Facebook, subscribing to Thrifty Minnesota email updates, checking out our advertisers or telling your friends about Thrifty Minnesota.  Any help is appreciated!

You can also scroll down to the end of the list to see all of the Large Charity Sales.

This new version of the studio’s animated classic refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. Each new video clip from the movie makes us more and more excited to finally see it! Here is the latest:

“Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.

Directed by Oscar® winner Bill Condon based on the 1991 animated film, “Beauty and the Beast” is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards® (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice. “Beauty and the Beast” will be released in U.S. theaters on March 17, 2017.

NEWSIES The Broadway Musical on the Big Screen – Reader Giveaway

It’s not so easy to get to a Broadway show here in Minnesota, especially with the original Broadway cast members, but Fathom Events and Disney Theatrical Productions are teaming up to make that a bit easier! They are bringing the Tony Award-winning musical NEWSIES to theaters throughout the country on Feb. 16, 18, and 22! This family friendly show is no longer on Broadway or touring, so this will be the last chance to see NEWSIES, and many original Broadway cast members are returning for this performance! Order tickets HERE.

Filmed live on stage at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, CA, this not-to-be-missed high energy show stars Original Broadway cast members Jeremy Jordan as “Jack Kelly,” Kara Lindsay as “Katherine,” Ben Fankhauser as “Davey” and Andrew Keenan-Bolger as “Crutchie”. They’re joined by North American Tour stars Steve Blanchard as “Joseph Pulitzer,” and Aisha de Haas as “Medda Larkin,” and Ethan Steiner as “Les” along with members of both the Broadway and North American Tour ensembles, filling the stage with more “newsies” and more dancing than ever before.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century and based on a true story, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike and take a stand for what’s right.

Reader Giveaway: Two (2) lucky Thrifty Minnesota readers will each win a family four-pack of tickets to see NEWSIES at AMC Coon Rapids on Saturday, February 18! To enter, just complete the entry form below by 11:59pm ET on 2/14/17. Good luck!

Have You Seen this DAVANNI’S Remodel? + Reader Gift Card Giveaway

DAVANNI’S has been part of the Twin Cities for over 40 years. While I’m happy that many of the things I loved about DAVANNI’S in my youth are still the same, it is great to see them continuing to make changes and improvements every year. Some of the recent changes have been to remodel several locations. Last week we took a visit to the recently remodeled Minnetonka store to take a look and, of course, eat some of our DAVANNI’S favorites AND something new.

To give you an idea of the OLD look of the Minnetonka location, this is a glimpse of what it looked like before the remodeling job was started. (I have to say I’m not a fan of that crazy print on the fabric covering the booth seats.)

The DAVANNI’S Minnetonka “facelift” created a brighter and airier interior. A bar serving wine, and tap and bottled beer, including several kinds of locally brewed craft beers, was added, complete with bar seating. The store’s party room was also remodeled.

Several other DAVANNI’S locations have also been remodeled including Edina and Eagan, with bars/beer taps added to the Chanhassen, Cleaveland and Grand and Uptown locations. The Eden Prairie location will also be adding a bar and updating soon. Additional bar tap installs will be found in Arden Hills, Bloomington, Woodbury an Plymouth.

Once we took a look at the remodeling results, it was time to eat! For lunch we mixed things up and had a few things that we tend to order on almost every visit, but also tried a couple of new things. For the kid, pizza was a must!

My all-time DAVANNI’S favorite is the Garlic Cheese Bread. I seriously don’t know anyone else who can make a garlic cheese bread as good as DAVANNI’S!

For something new we tried the Chicken Cobb Salad. It’s made with Sliced Chicken, Hard Boiled Egg, Crumbled Bacon, Crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese, Red Onion, Tomato and Dressing of Choice. It’s very good and very filling!

A must when I visit DAVANNI’S with my sister is sharing an Assorted Hot Hoagie on grain bread. That has been our go-to sandwich for close to two decades. It’s made with an assortment of three meats (thus the name Assorted) — Ham, Smoked Ham, and Salami and topped with garlic butter and mozzarella cheese, then broiled. It’s dressed with tomatoes, lettuce, mayo (which we get on the side), onions, and DAVANNI’S own secret dressing. It’s so delicious that I am going to have to head to DAVANNI’S to get one for lunch when I finish writing this.

We topped off our meal with cookies – Chocolate Chip for the kid and the NEW Sea Salt Caramel Cookies for the grown-ups. These new cookies are DELICIOUS and were developed by Davanni’s own in house Oven Hearth bakers and are made and baked fresh at their totally company-owned bakery in Saint Paul. The Sea Salt Caramel Cookies are only in “test” right now. So, the more you buy, the more likely they will be added to the permanent menu. So everybody PLEASE buy these cookies because I want them to stay on the menu!!

Reader Giveaway: One lucky Thrifty Minnesota reader will receive a $25 DAVANNI’S gift card. To enter, just complete the entry form below by 11:59pm ET on 2/16/17. Good luck!
