Do you remember when the USA Olympic Hockey team beat the Soviet Union to win the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics? Even if you weren’t alive yet, you’ve no doubt heard the tale.
Well, it’s been 40 years since that “greatest day in USA sports history,” and St. Paul is celebrating with a The Greatest Day Celebration on Saturday, February 22nd. Considering the head coach of the team was St. Paul’s own Herb Brooks, it seems fitting that the celebration happens in his hometown.
Events will take place from 8 am to 5 pm, with a parade at 1 pm. The celebration kicks off with a morning of hockey games showcasing youth teams as they recreate the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic tournament, each representing one of the 12 competing nations.
The parade will start in Rice Park and travel through the heart of St. Paul, ending at CHS Field with a Parade of Nations, on-ice ceremony, autograph session and final youth hockey game highlighting USA vs. USSR.
General admission to all CHS Field events that day (including Wells Fargo WinterSkate) is FREE, and you can also download a free Metro Transit pass to get to the celebration without having to worry about parking and traffic hassles.
