"Mother Courage and Her Children" is a scathing critique of profiteering through war and misfortune. As relevant today as when it was written, the drama follows a woman determined to make her living from war at any cost. Over the course of the play, she loses all three of her children to the very war from which she tried to profit. This production at The Lab Theater in Minneapolis features a diverse ensemble, and presents a fresh perspective on this traditionally Euro-centric piece. Exposing the oft-unrecognized impacts of war on women, LGBTQ2A+, and indigenous, black and brown bodies, this work uplifts these voices, and empowers artists to connect to their own truth in this historical text. Newpoli is a unique group with a powerful sound and a 21st-century take on their tradition that is beyond comparison. With exciting interpretations of traditional and originals that draw deeply from one of the world’s lesser known music traditions, Newpoli is Italy’s next inspiring interpreter of southern Italy’s taranta tradition. The group stirs up a mesmerizing sound that melds traditional Italian folk music, Greek and Turkish grooves, Mediterranean and Spanish colors, and a contemporary sensibility they call “Mediterranean Pulse - Ritmi della Terra.” The group is fronted by singers Carmen Marsico and Angela Rossi, a pair that "PopMatters" called “visual and musical cynosures with their contrasting looks and twining vocal lines.” For this concert at The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, you’ll hear the tamburello, played by virtuoso Fabio Pirozzolo, pounding out the heartbeat of Newpoli’s music. The two female singers will start up a wild, frenetic dance and you'll have a very hard time sitting still! The tempo is high, and the drama and passion can be heard in every note! [less-]

In Rick Shiomi's re-imagined version of "The Mikado", flirting is still declared a crime and punishable by death. Yet, there's a lot of flirting going on in the town of Ti-Tea-Pu, in the land of England. In anticipation of the arrival of the monarch, The Mikado, a tailor has been appointed Lord High Executioner and must behead someone before his majesty arrives. The tailor himself is involved in a love triangle and attempts to set up his rival, Franki Poo, before he loses his own head. It’s all the fun and games of Gilbert and Sullivan, with a modern twist. In describing his vision for his retelling of this classic operetta, Rick Shiomi says, “Our re-imagined production of "The Mikado" will deconstruct the unfortunate stereotypes while still retaining the humor and classic music; getting at the heart of the universal human experience through the lens of our diverse contemporary American culture.” See this new production by the Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company at the Howard Conn Fine Arts Center in Minneapolis. Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre presents "What the Moon Sees" -- a layered collage of theater flamenco performances directed by multi-award winning dancer-choreographer Artistic Director Susana di Palma. The concert will consist of original contemporary works by Spanish Choreographer Belén Maya, Puerto Rican Choreographer Jeanne d’Arc Casas, and French Choreographer Fanny Ara. Woven among these works will be Susana di Palma’s "Casita," a premiered work on homeless women. "What The Moon Sees" will reflect the scope of Zorongo’s unique theater/flamenco vision that continues to invent, inspire and has enriched the community for 36 years. The evening will feature live music -- guitar, vocal, and percussion. The Lab Theater provides a unique space to have simultaneous scenes/choreographies happening at one time. "Casita" will be seen and “not seen,” just as the homeless are “seen but not seen.” The layering of realities -- the artistic, creative world and the deprivation of those without homes reflect our cities, our affluence. "Casita" will feature dancers Jeanne d’Arc Casas and Susana di Palma, original music performed by composer-guitarist Ben Abrahamson, blues-gospel singer-pianist-composer Billy Steele with blues-gospel singer Tonya Hughes and flamenco singer-percussionist Jose Moreno. "Casita" will be “work-shopped” at Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography in Tallahassee, Florida in January 2019 as part of di Palma’s 2017 McKnight Fellowship for Choreography. [less-]
