It’s hard to believe, but New Years Eve is going to be here before we know it! I am notorious for not planning ahead with NYE, but not this year. This list is FULL of great NYE ideas for kids and families!
The events are listed by city below. There are quite a few free events too! Please let me know if you have an event to add in the comments. And most importantly, have a Happy New Year!
Bloomington
Bloomington Ice Garden
New Year’s Eve Open Skate
Sunday, December 31st, 4-7pm
$8/person, includes skate rental
Lace up your skates and head over to Bloomington Ice Garden, 3600 West 98th Street, for a New Year’s Eve open skate. You can hit the ice on Monday, December 31, 4-7 p.m. All ages are welcome. Admission costs $8 if you preregister or pay at the door. This cost includes skate rental. Concessions will be open for purchase. Multiple sheets of ice will be open for skating with music. There will also be a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve countdown at 6:30 p.m.
Richardson Nature Center
Sledding and S’mores

Welcome the New Year with family, friends and the thrill of sledding. Warm up and roast a s’more next to a crackling fire. Bring your favorite sled and s’more supplies from home; we have limited sleds and s’mores available. This program takes place outdoors, please dress accordingly. No reservations needed, drop in anytime. Participants ages 11 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring family and friends together to celebrate the end of 2023 with a magical walk through the Arboretum’s Winter Lights display, family-friendly games and live music from Traveled Ground. Take your picture in a photo booth, add your hopes and dreams to the New Year Wish Tree and make a craft to bring home. Enjoy countdown celebrations on the hour at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. and again at 8, 9 and 10 p.m.

Enjoy a campfire to end 2023! Wrap up the year by writing down things you are happy to have end with 2023 and burning the paper in the fire. Make resolution rocks by writing a hope or resolution for the new year on a rock and take it home. Chat with a naturalist and enjoy the fire. Participants ages 11 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear closed-toe shoes. This program is outdoors; please dress for the weather.

The New Year’s Eve party takes place from 5-9 p.m. on December 31 at the nature center and features marshmallow roasting, hot chocolate, nature art and a luminary walk. In years past, the luminary walk took place on the nature center’s short loop, but for this year’s celebration, a longer option featuring the recently upgraded boardwalk. The entirety of the event will be held outside to ensure that attendees are protected from the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Numerous heaters and fires will be available to keep attendees warm.

Back again is the New Year’s Eve Matinee, an afternoon event for children ages 3-8 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Later, the New Year’s Eve Family Celebration, recommended for children under 12 years old, kicks off at 6 p.m. Both events feature large inflatables, obstacle courses, music and more! Early registration is suggested; these events typically sell out. Only children need to be registered for the Matinee and all participants must register for the family celebration. The cost for each event is $13 per ticket if pre-registered or $15 at the door, if available.
