Silent Sky, the remarkable true story of Henrietta Leavitt, one of the pioneering women astronomers working at Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, is playing now through the end of March at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson. Keep reading for a ticket discount!
Have you ever heard of the play, Silent Sky? I sure hadn’t when I got the opportunity to review the show. But I do know the high quality of work The Phipps Center for the Arts creates, so I thought– why not see something new?
Silent Sky is set in the early 1900s and follows the story of Henrietta Leavitt. Originally from Wisconsin, Henrietta had always been drawn to the stars in the sky and worked to become a “computer” recording star data at the Harvard Observatory.
While Henrietta and her other women colleagues were allowed to record star data, they were not supposed to have their own independent ideas or even touch the telescope that the men were allowed to use. Completely unfair, right?
Despite this, Henrietta persevered and made significant discoveries that define our ability to track and analyze stars even today! While I had no idea about her before the show, I felt inspired and emotionally moved following the performance.
Silent Sky is in the Black Box theatre in the Phipps with seating all around the stage in the middle. There is truly no bad seat in the house- the set pieces move around and the actors play to all angles of the space. While there are only 5 actors in the play, this cast is strong and mighty! My emotions went from intense laughter to tears throughout the story multiple times.
Silent Sky is recommended for ages 13+ and I think that’s mostly because of the length of the play. It is 2 hours and 10 minutes plus a 15 intermission. It didn’t drag on for me, but I could see how a younger audience member might have a hard time sitting that long. Beverages and snacks are available in the lobby, I do enjoy how they are allowed in the theatre as well!
I would highly recommend Silent Sky. It’s a brilliant, moving play. You’ll be pushed to think of your own legacy, your own time in this world. While it may not always be easy to ask those questions of yourself- I love when art pushes me to think and grow. Isn’t that the whole point of theatre?
