Head to The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) in Minneapolis to see their latest exhibit: A Thousand Nesting Dolls which has been extended through April 6th, 2025!

A white historical building with red-tiled roofs under a blue sky. A banner on the tower advertises "A Thousand Nestling Dolls" exhibition from October 5, 2024, to March 9, 2025. Potted plants and a bare tree are in the foreground.

Have you been to The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis? I’ve seen the interesting white building on the corner of Stevens in Minneapolis but I had never stopped, that is until this past weekend. My son and I finally had the opportunity to visit and we had a really fun time checking it out!

A museum exhibit featuring large, colorful matryoshka doll sculptures stands in a gallery with arched walls. Display cases of smaller items are visible in the background. The setting has wooden floors and a high ceiling with lights.

The reason we wanted to visit was to check out TMORA’s latest exhibit: A Thousand Nesting Dolls. I don’t know about you, but I think nesting dolls are amazing and to see over 1,000 in just one place? I knew I had to cross that off my bucket list!

TMORA’s collection of nesting dolls is the largest in the country and it featured so many interesting dolls. There were nesting dolls with over 20 parts, different animals, characters, paintings and more. It was truly a fest for the eyes! There was even a nesting doll so large you could step inside!

A serene art gallery features several framed paintings on cream-colored walls. The room has wooden floors, a bench in the center, and spotlights illuminating the artwork. The paintings depict various scenes and portraits.

There’s much more to see and visit at TMORA beyond the nesting dolls. With 3 full floors of galleries, you can also visit the Masterpieces of Sacred Art from the Kushnirskiy Collection, Russia’s Native Mushrooms: Botanical Watercolors, the Permanent Collection Gallery and more.

A young boy in a blue checkered shirt and baseball cap stands in front of a large painting. The artwork depicts a woman painting Matryoshka dolls. The boy is holding a pamphlet and pointing at the painting.

My son also had the opportunity to play The Gallery Hunt where he found 9 images within artworks at the museum in exchange for a prize! As a parent, I love when organizations create engaging activities like this. It can help give purpose to our exploring and start interesting conversations during our visit and beyond.

We also enjoyed visiting the TMORA Shop, or as they say “A Shop Wrapped in Mystery Inside an Enigma.” They select pieces from Europe and feature designers, artisans and makers. There were so many fun holiday ideas for gift giving! Think beautifully made ornaments, speciality chocolates, holiday themed nesting dolls and much more. Also you don’t need to purchase admission to visit the TMORA Shop on it’s own.

Art gallery displaying "Russia's Native Mushrooms: Botanical Watercolors by Alexander Viazmensky." Features framed mushroom illustrations, a fireplace, green wall, and a black bench. Wood flooring and soft lighting create a cozy ambiance.
