Have you ever heard of the Minnesota Toy Library? It’s a a toy lending program for families with children ages birth to 5 years much like a library for books. With a membership you can check out up to 5 toys, take them home for 2-4 weeks and then bring them back to exchange for different ones!

Did you know in North America, the average amount spent on toys per child was $300 U.S. dollars in 2019? Most of which will end up in landfills. Joining the Minnesota Toy Library is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint! Memberships range from $40- $100, depending on what works best for each family. There are also memberships available for those who volunteer for only $20!

Right now the Minnesota Toy Library currently has 600 members, the most they’ve ever had at one given time! They have 10,676 toys between the 3 locations in South Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis, and St. Paul. Open hours vary by location, but they keep a Google calendar updated on their website with accurate information.

What kind of toys does the Minnesota Toy Library have? A little bit of everything– board games, blocks, dramatic play, fine motor, literacy, large motor, math, music, puzzles, sensory, science and so much more! There is something for every kiddo ages 0-5!

What about when toys break or lose pieces? Every Minnesota Toy Library location has a Terracycle box. This is where broken or lost pieces go, they can be saved and added to another toy missing a piece, donated or used to create a new toy like color matching or shape sorters. The Terracycle boxes are another way that toys are being kept out of landfills! You can check out all the ways Minnesota Toy Library recycles and reuses toys here.
