Treasure Island is sailing onto the stage now through October 19th at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis!
Did you know Treasure Island was published in 1883? The iconic pirate story by Robert Louis Stevenson has been reimagined many times over but there is still much to discover at Treasure Island at Children’s Theatre Company!
My son and I had the opportunity to attend opening night of Treasure Island and we had a great time at this thought-provoking show. First off, I want to mention Children’s Theatre Company recommends Treasure Island for all ages 8 and up. I didn’t fully understand that warning until I saw the show– this performance has loud, sometimes scary moments and content that would be beyond understanding for kids under 8. I’d highly recommend following their warning on this show!
Treasure Island is the story of Jim Hawkins– a young boy who yearns to sail the open seas. It’s his story of growing up, learning who to believe in and how to do the best in hard situations. This production included live music, played by the actors themselves on the stage. Not only did the music break up the longer moments of dialogue, the music was beautiful and it was interesting to see the instruments pop up on the stage.
Children’s Theatre Company always does amazing work with the set and costumes. As an audience member, I truly felt we were sailing on the sea– the brilliant ship set, the sound effects, music and more made me feel a part of the crew.
If you plan on going to Treasure Island, Children’s Theatre Company makes a wonderful Audience Guide that you can check out before or after you go. Filled with information about the show, characters, thought-provoking conversation questions, the history of Treasure Island, games and more. As a parent, I just love the resources that Children’s Theatre provides!
Don’t miss the fun activities in the lobby before the show and during intermission including a “Tattoo” Parlor for your own version of Long John Silver’s iconic ink, learn how to tie sailor’s knots, write out your own Sea Shanty Mad Lib, pose by the ship’s wheel and more!
Treasure Island is playing now through October 19th. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased now on the Children’s Theatre Company website. Run time is 2 hours with one 15 minute intermission.
