When You Trap a Tiger is a collaboration between Stages Theatre Company and Theatre Mu- the premier Asian American theater company in the Midwest and one of the largest in the nation. When You Trap a Tiger follows main character Lily as her family moves back to be with her halmeoni (or Grandmother in Korean). We meet Lily’s sister and mother, along with some new friends. When Lily’s halmeoni gets sick, Lily meets a tiger from her halmeoni’s stories and vows to help her halmeoni recover from illness.
I was excited to hear about Korean Folktales during When You Trap a Tiger, while my son was excited to see “the tiger.” The tiger is an epic puppet– it’s amazing and slightly scary to see up close. We sat in the first row (it’s open seating) and I’d recommend sitting up higher in the theatre if you have kiddos that are afraid of big animals. Even I was kind of scared of the tiger puppet, while also in awe of the amazing creation!
Performed in the Jaycee Black Box Theatre, When You Trap a Tiger is 85 minutes with no intermission and recommended for kids ages 7+. The play does have a content warning, as it deals with illness and death of a loved one. Parents know best how to decide if their kiddo is ready to learn about this. I find art to be one of the best ways to discuss feelings and big events with my kids.
