Don’t miss your chance to see the World Premiere production of Drawing Lessons at Children’s Theatre Company now through November 10th, 2024!
There is something so exciting about going to see a play that’s a world premiere! My son and I felt lucky to be the audience of Drawing Lessons at Children’s Theatre Company. It was a play about graphic novels and comics- how fun!
The story follows, Kate, a middle schooler who just moved to a new school in Minneapolis in the 90s. She has a hard time to speaking up with new people and finds comfort in her drawings. Struggling with her Korean heritage and the loss of her mom, Kate befriends a comic strip artist and art shop owner, and they end up pushing each other to find their true artistic voices.
It was a really fun show to watch visually– the actors actually drew images during the live play! The images were projected up onto screens so you could watch them drawing in real time. We had never experienced anything like that during a play, it really added to the immersive experience of the performance.
As a parent, I always love the Audience Guide that the Children’s Theatre Company creates to connect the performance with continued learning opportunities. This is an especially great guide because it continues many of the exact drawing prompts and ideas discussed during the show!
Drawing Lessons is recommended for audiences upper elementary and up. I agree with that statement, I think the hardest part for my 8 year old was sitting through the 90 minute performance with no intermission. It was well worth some extra wiggles toward the end to see this show!
Tickets to Drawing Lessons start at $15 and can be found on the Children’s Theatre Company website. Limited tickets are available now through November 10th, 2024. Don’t miss your chance to see this world premiere performance!
