Stages Theatre Jr. Sensory Friendly Performance
I brought my five year old autistic daughter, Vera, to the Sensory Friendly Performance of Finding Nemo Jr. I was blown away by Stages Theatre Company’s thoughtfulness for theatergoers with special needs.
Before the show they had a table set up that audience members could visit. There were headphones to borrow, branded sensory fidgets to keep, and most of all- a Theatre Guide. The Theatre Guide was like a social story: written with words and pictures all about going to the theatre and seeing the show. It was extremely detailed and well written, and my daughter and I loved reading it! (I actually plan to keep it for the next show we go to too!)
They also had extra staff on hand to help with transitions. Lights were kept dimmed but not off and the music was quieter. The audience size was also smaller so kids had more room and could even switch seats during the show. Best of all- this performance was a “no hush zone.” As a mom, it was awesome to see (and hear) how much all the kids loved the performance.
It’s easy to see how Stages Theatre Company has dedicated time to make the theatre experience great for ALL members of the audience. They also provide American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters, Audio Described (AD) Services, Mobility Seating and Pay What You Can Performances.
Stages Theatre Company offers a Sensory Friendly Performance for each of their productions on a Saturday at 10am. You can find a full list of the upcoming dates for these and all their accessibility options on their website.
