You can view larger than life sculptures of Alebrijes right in St. Paul on Raspberry Island from June 1- October 26, 2025!
When I heard about a new outdoor art exhibit on Raspberry Island, I knew I needed to check it out ASAP. While it doesn’t technically open til June 1st my kiddos and I ventured to Raspberry Island for a picnic over Memorial Day Weekend and got a first look at the Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island exhibit.
Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island is a set of 16 Alebrije sculptures ranging from 4 to 16 feet tall right on Raspberry Island in downtown St. Paul! These larger than life sculptures are extremely colorful and mystical.
Alebrijes are a Mexican folk art that often combine multiple animals into one body– think a fish body with a bird head, etc. The details on these sculptures are absolutely amazing! And we didn’t even see all of them since the exhibit doesn’t technically open until June 1st.
The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Latino Museum and the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage. The Alebrijes are actually made out of paper mache so organizers expect that throughout the exhibit the sculptures will need to be updated and/or replaced due to being out in the elements. The amazing artists who made these are: Perla Miriam Salgado Zamorano, Alejandro Camacho Barrera, Edgar Israel Camargo Reyes, and Alberto Moreno Fernández.
It was really special to see the bright, vibrant colors of the Alebrijes with the St. Paul skyline in the background. If you’ve never been to Raspberry Island, it’s easy to get to and there’s even a small free parking lot right on island itself. Lots of street parking is available leading up to the island as well.
My kids and I throughly enjoyed our picnic lunch and then explored the small island with the Alebrijes sculptures. We will definitely be back, as several Alebrijes were still being constructed before the opening day on June 1st!
There will also be a special community celebration on Saturday, June 14th from 12- 5pm. Enjoy food, music, fun activities, and a chance to meet with many local organizations at this incredible FREE outdoor art exhibit and celebration.
Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island is open June 1st- October 26th, 2025. Raspberry Island is located in downtown St. Paul and is open every day of the week from daylight to 11pm.
