Don’t miss your chance to see Senorita Mariposa, an uplifting and exciting adventure, running now through October 6th at Stages Theatre Company
Stages Theatre Company is at it again with another amazing production: Senorita Mariposa. This is a world premiere musical, based on the book with the same name by Ben Gundersheimer. Senorita Mariposa is a beautiful monarch butterfly on an exciting adventure through the United States to join her family in Mexico during the annual butterfly migration.
My daughter and I loved the beautiful costumes, the upbeat music, the Spanish/English dialogue and the exciting story. As a mom, I loved how open Senorita Mariposa was with her feelings of uncertainty and fear about the journey ahead. I also enjoyed how the character, Sol (Sun), encouraged Senorita Mariposa to “trust her instincts,” just like we encourage our own children as they grow up.
My daughter and I attended the Sensory Friendly performance of Senorita Mariposa. As a parent of a child with Autism, I want to thank Stages for taking the time to have a performance welcoming to my daughter and other audience members with special needs.
At the Sensory Friendly Performance, they keep the lights a little lighter, the music is a bit softer, they provide a plot summary and guide for the theatre, as well as fun building block fidgets to take home and headphones to use during the show. Stages Theatre Company does an excellent job creating a safe space for people of all kinds to experience theatre! Typically the Sensory Friendly Shows are held on a Saturday at 10am for all shows in their performance season.
Senorita Mariposa is recommended for all ages in the Jaycees Studio Theatre, a black box- type theatre space. The show is around 45 minutes with no intermission. It’s very fast paced, but not overwhelming. My 5 year old daughter sat through the whole production without getting bored at all and I was a bit sad when it was over! Tickets are available on their website with performances happening now through October 6th.
If you can’t make it to Senorita Mariposa, check out The Miraculous Journey Of Edward Tulane on the Mainstage now through October 27th. It’s adapted from the book by Kate DiCamillo and is recommended for ages 7+.
