I am a little bit spoiled with this job! Getting to see shows at Children’s Theatre Company is amazing, but going to a World Premiere Musical? That’s epic!
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Twelve Kinds of Ice. It’s a story based on the book by Ellen Bryan Obed and it’s about ice, but also so much more! Creator Ben Steinfeld decided to make the story into a musical after reading it to his son for a bedtime story. The musical centers around Ellen and her father during her childhood and their winters spent making an ice rink in the backyard. I think a lot of us can relate to that here in Minnesota!

Ellen and her father find joy in all Twelve Kinds of Ice, (yes, there are really 12 kinds of ice mentioned throughout the show) with the excitement of first ice to the sadness of the last ice of the season. The catchy songs are woven throughout the story and both actors do an absolutely amazing job bringing the characters to life. The life lessons are profound but easy to understand in the form of gorgeous songs.
Without giving to much away, this show does touch on some intense topics– growing up, family, grief– there’s a lot going on during this one hour musical. But Twelve Kinds of Ice is my favorite kind of theatre, art that can get you talking! My 10 year old son and I had some wonderful conversations after the show about my dad/his grandpa, and my own childhood. I left the theatre inspired and reminiscent!

Twelve Kinds of Ice runs one hour without an intermission on the Cargill Stage at Children’s Theatre Company. It’s best for kids ages 7 and up, but you know your kiddos best. This production touches on themes of family, memory, grief, resilience, growing up, and the passage of time. There weren’t many sensory moments or anything too scary, personally I think my 10 year old son was the perfect age for this show! You can always learn more about the show on the Children’s Theatre Company website, they do a great job of explaining the themes and content warnings.
Did you know that Children’s Theatre Company is committed to developing and premiering new works? This is one out of two new musicals on the way this season alone! There are over 200 new plays and musicals that have been developed at CTC. That’s amazing we have the chance to see new work right here in Minnesota!
Twelve Kinds of Ice is on stage now through November 22nd. Tickets start at $30 on the Children’s Theatre Company website. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this world premiere musical! You never know how far it could go, and you’d have the chance to say– “I saw it at CTC first!”
