Few Seats But Great Eats – Best Tiny Restaurants in the Twin Cities

Sometimes going out to eat is just hoping there’ll be a seat when you arrive.  Sure, some of the fancy places take reservations, but if you want down home cooking then that’s probably not an option.  We love to try off the beaten path places and have discovered a selection of few seats but great eats in Minneapolis and St. Paul. We think these are a few of the best tiny restaurants in the Twin Cities for down-home cooking!

Our most recent adventures took us to Our Kitchen, located in South Minneapolis.  This small place only has about 19 seats – yes you read that correctly 19. Some are at the counter and the rest line up to face the seat.  We lucked out and only had a short 5 minute wait before three seats opened up.  We each ordered breakfast and all agreed it was delicious and would be back.  I’m thinking our secret to lucking out and getting seats was the fact that we arrived a half hour before they closed up.  Everyone was friendly and many were greeted by name.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Al’s Breakfast but I recall delicious pancakes. It’s located in the Dinky Town area of Minneapolis, not too far from the University of Minneapolis campus.  I’m hoping to bring our girls this summer. This little gem with only 14 seats means that you need to be prepared to wait a bit.

The third of the few seats but great eats is probably the most of famous of all.  Mickey’s Dining Car is located in St. Paul and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  This is the only one of the three where you can eat at night -the other two are morning and early afternoon only.  When we ate here it was in the evening and we enjoyed some great malts and burgers.  The best part was sitting at the counter watching the cook.  Our girls were in awe of all the tiny drawers and spaces where the food was kept.   Mickey’s does have a few more seats than the previous places I mentioned, but don’t get too excited as it’s still pretty limited seating.

I would love to know if there are other few seats but great eats around the metro or even outstate Minnesota.  Please let us know, we would love to give them a try.

Have You Seen this DAVANNI’S Remodel? + Reader Gift Card Giveaway

DAVANNI’S has been part of the Twin Cities for over 40 years. While I’m happy that many of the things I loved about DAVANNI’S in my youth are still the same, it is great to see them continuing to make changes and improvements every year. Some of the recent changes have been to remodel several locations. Last week we took a visit to the recently remodeled Minnetonka store to take a look and, of course, eat some of our DAVANNI’S favorites AND something new.

To give you an idea of the OLD look of the Minnetonka location, this is a glimpse of what it looked like before the remodeling job was started. (I have to say I’m not a fan of that crazy print on the fabric covering the booth seats.)

The DAVANNI’S Minnetonka “facelift” created a brighter and airier interior. A bar serving wine, and tap and bottled beer, including several kinds of locally brewed craft beers, was added, complete with bar seating. The store’s party room was also remodeled.

Several other DAVANNI’S locations have also been remodeled including Edina and Eagan, with bars/beer taps added to the Chanhassen, Cleaveland and Grand and Uptown locations. The Eden Prairie location will also be adding a bar and updating soon. Additional bar tap installs will be found in Arden Hills, Bloomington, Woodbury an Plymouth.

Once we took a look at the remodeling results, it was time to eat! For lunch we mixed things up and had a few things that we tend to order on almost every visit, but also tried a couple of new things. For the kid, pizza was a must!

My all-time DAVANNI’S favorite is the Garlic Cheese Bread. I seriously don’t know anyone else who can make a garlic cheese bread as good as DAVANNI’S!

For something new we tried the Chicken Cobb Salad. It’s made with Sliced Chicken, Hard Boiled Egg, Crumbled Bacon, Crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese, Red Onion, Tomato and Dressing of Choice. It’s very good and very filling!

A must when I visit DAVANNI’S with my sister is sharing an Assorted Hot Hoagie on grain bread. That has been our go-to sandwich for close to two decades. It’s made with an assortment of three meats (thus the name Assorted) — Ham, Smoked Ham, and Salami and topped with garlic butter and mozzarella cheese, then broiled. It’s dressed with tomatoes, lettuce, mayo (which we get on the side), onions, and DAVANNI’S own secret dressing. It’s so delicious that I am going to have to head to DAVANNI’S to get one for lunch when I finish writing this.

We topped off our meal with cookies – Chocolate Chip for the kid and the NEW Sea Salt Caramel Cookies for the grown-ups. These new cookies are DELICIOUS and were developed by Davanni’s own in house Oven Hearth bakers and are made and baked fresh at their totally company-owned bakery in Saint Paul. The Sea Salt Caramel Cookies are only in “test” right now. So, the more you buy, the more likely they will be added to the permanent menu. So everybody PLEASE buy these cookies because I want them to stay on the menu!!

Reader Giveaway: One lucky Thrifty Minnesota reader will receive a $25 DAVANNI’S gift card. To enter, just complete the entry form below by 11:59pm ET on 2/16/17. Good luck!

Hard Rock Cafe World Burger Tour + Reader Giveaway

xIMG_2204

My first memory of eating at a Hard Rock Cafe, I was probably in middle school and I was with my family in Orlando.  Years later while in college, I ate at several while wandering through different countries.  I still have the t-shirts from Berlin and Paris. Fast forward to just a couple of days ago, the four of us enjoyed a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe here in Minnesota.  If you haven’t been to our local Hard Rock Cafe, it’s tucked into Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America.

We decided to celebrate my husband’s birthday at the Hard Rock Cafe. He was excited after learning about their special World Burger Tour menu. There are lots of worldly options to choose from:

Java Lava Burger (Seattle, United States) – a Certified Angus Beef patty grilled and dressed in a house-made espresso rub and topped with lava sauce, crunchy java onions, bacon, melted Cheddar cheese and garnished with a fried jalapeño

Tandoori Chicken Burger (Mumbai, India) – a dark meat chicken patty seasoned with aromatic spices and fresh herbs, topped with mint mayonnaise and served with a side of cucumber

Jamaican Jerk Burger (Montego Bay, Jamaica) – a Certified Angus Beef patty topped with banana pepper rings, mango jalapeño cream cheese and jerk mayonnaise

ATOMIC! Burger (Las Vegas, United States) – a Certified Angus Beef patty topped with Atomic beer-battered peppers, pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, garlic chipotle ketchup and chipotle mayonnaise

To experience the World Burger Tour my husband ordered the Jamaican Jerk Burger, and was pleasantly surprised to find he liked it.  He likes beef burgers, but wanted to branch out and try the chicken.  He really enjoyed the combination of flavors:

It was fun to see all the music memorabilia as well as the artwork on all the walls.   Our girls recognized some of the artists that had guitars, or clothing framed up on the walls.

One special area that caught all of our attention, the Prince window.  It had three of his outfits, as well as a photograph of him.

Bruegger’s Bagels Pays Tribute to Prince

Bruegger’s Bagels Pays Tribute to Prince

If you’re like me, you think bagels should be one of the food groups.  So many great options to choose from these days.  They make a perfect breakfast or snack!  Tomorrow April 28th is a great day for a bagel and to support a local music program. Twin Cities area Bruegger’s Bagels will bake purple bagels in honor of Prince and donate proceeds from the sale of each bagel to the MN Music Coalition, which is the only statewide nonprofit devoted solely to supporting Minnesota’s popular musicians, including pop, rock and R&B artists.  Sounds like a great way to raise money and support an amazing program.

What:            As a member of the Minneapolis community for more than 32 years, Bruegger’s Bagels joins in mourning the death of the city’s favorite son, Prince. It will pay tribute to him with a fundraiser for a cause he championed throughout his life – the Minnesota Music Coalition.  “The Minnesota Music Coalition is proud to partner with Bruegger’s to celebrate Prince’s life and the local music scene that he helped build. Sales of this bagel will continue that legacy by supporting our statewide program to provide mentoring and music industry training to the next generation of pop, rock and R&B artists,” said Ellen Stanley, Executive Director, MMC.

On Thursday, April 28, Bruegger’s Bagels will bake purple bagels in his honor and donate proceeds from the sale of each bagel to The Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC) which is the only statewide nonprofit devoted solely to supporting Minnesota’s popular musicians.
