Check out larger-than-life sculptures made entirely from recovered ocean plastic! Washed Ashore is now on view at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory now through Labor Day.
Summer is almost here and I don’t know about your family, but mine always wants to add Como Zoo and Conservatory to our summer bucket list! We love visiting the animals, seeing the flower show, riding the carousel and more. This summer there’s even more to explore with the Washed Ashore Exhibit.
Washed Ashore are larger-than-life animal sculptures made entirely from recovered ocean and beach plastic. My daughter and I went on opening day and they were even cooler than I imagined!
The Washed Ashore sculptures are located throughout the zoo so it feels like a bit of a treasure hunt as you search around to find them! Each animal is named and has a sign with information about recycling and what you can find in the statue. Items like sand toys, toothbrushes, toilet seats, shoes, lighters and so much more make up these gigantic creatures. We had so much find finding the different items!
As amazing as the sculptures are to see– the message behind them is even more important: it’s a visual example of how plastic pollution has an impact on oceans, waterways, and wildlife. Seeing these sculptures really made me stop and think about my own actions and impact.
Como Pack Zoo and Conservatory is home to 10 Washed Ashore sculptures this summer, including:
• Chompers Bull Shark
• Gertrude African Penguin
• Hugo Humpback Whale Tail
• Sea Jelly Bloom
• Scrappy the Sea Lion Pup
• Priscilla Rainbow Parrotfish
• Rosa Bald Eagle
• Nora Salmon
• Natasha Sea Turtle
• Sebastian James the Puffin
Washed Ashore is on exhibit now at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory located at 1225 Estabrook Drive St. Paul, MN 55103. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. You can read more about Washed Ashore on the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory website.
