Chanhassen-Carver County Day at the Arboretum

For those of you lucky enough to live in either Chanhassen or Carver County, July 14th is your lucky day.  Tomorrow, Friday July 14th is Chanhassen-Carver County Day at the Arboretum.  That means a full day of free admission for all of you.

Chanhassen and Carver County residents will get a free entry to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (8am-8pm) on July 14 where they can meet city and county officials, have coffee, juice and bagels and take in the summer exhibits at the Arboretum.

Arboretum Director Peter Moe and other elected city and county officials will start the event with a public welcome to  residents and visitors in the Oswald Visitor Center at 10 a.m.  Enjoy complimentary coffee, juice and bagels during the welcome.

Plan your family friendly day with these activities in mind:

  • Storytime at 10:30
  • Free, guided garden highlights tour starting at 11am
  • Take a ride on the free BeeLine Shuttle

Prince or Princess Dress-Up Wednesdays at Como Town

Do you have a little one that loves to dress up?  it’s time to find the princess or prince outfits and save some money. Como town has a special promotion taking place Wednesdays in June.  If your child goes to the park on June 21st or 28th dressed in a royalty theme costume from 10am – noon you will be able to purchase an unlimited ride wristband for only $13.95, (saving $8).  What a fun idea!

Every Wednesday in June from 10am – noon is dress-up day at Como Town. Come to the park dressed like royalty and collect a bounty! You will receive an unlimited ride wristband for $13.95 ($8 savings).

If your child tries to put on their Halloween costume multiple times a year, now they can! Dress them head to toe in their favorite royal garments and come to Como Town. Our face painters can complete their look with fun, eye catching designs.

Marcus Theatres 2017 Summer Family Movies

School’s out and the summer heat is here.  A great place to escape the heat is to head to the the air-conditioned movie theatre. 25th Annual Book’em Used Book Sale

The 25th Annual Book’em Used Book Sale started on June 3rd and goes through the 17th.   This isn’t your typical used book sale, it’s enormous so there really is something for everyone.  Located in Richfield at the former Sports Authority store, across 494 from REI. The money raised goes to a great cause, crime prevention programs in Bloomington.  You can find more information as well as the hours here on the flyer. The best part, no admission to this great sale!  

The Bloomington Crime Prevention Association (BCPA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose primary focus is to raise money for community based crime prevention programs.

We are best known for our annual fundraiser, the Book’Em Used Book Sale, one of the largest used book sales in the Midwest.

Public Tour of the Minnesota Governor’s Residence

If you love history or are just curious about the inside of a famous house, then a public tour of the Minnesota Governor’s Residence is something just for you.   The inside of the residence is only open at certain times and reservations are needed.  If you want to tour the grounds and gardens you can find that information here.  To reserve the inside tour, you need to email and give your name. More specifics can be found here on the website.

The Governor’s Residence will host six public tours during the summer months in June, July, and August! Tour dates are the following Tuesdays:

  • June 13 and 27 (Limited Availability)
  • July 11 and 25
  • August 8 and 22

What You Need to Know Before Your Tour Begins

Please review this important information before your tour begins:

  • Tours of the Residence are always free, and groups may not charge for them.
  • Cameras and video are allowed in public spaces. Please feel free to take photos!
  • Backpacks, bags, and strollers are subject to screening.
  • Visitors should dress accordingly to the weather, as there may be a wait outdoors before entering the Residence.
  • Street parking is available on Summit Avenue and on local side streets.

Touring the MN State Capitol

How long has it been since you’ve been to the Minnesota State Capitol?  Did you go there on a school field trip many years ago or perhaps you are new to the area, well now is the time to add it to your list and go.  First of all it’s totally free, and it’s also been remodeled recently.  It’s been a three year process to get it to where it is today.  Three years full of renovation, restoration and refurbishing.  There’ll be a grand opening celebration of the three year renovation, it will take place in August.  Don’t wait until August though, it’s something you can do now.  More information on the free guided tours can be found here. you can also do a self-guided tour and more information on that can found here.

Highlights from the 2013-17 restoration

  • Fully restored Senate and House of Representatives chambers and Supreme Court courtroom
  • Restored and repaired exterior marble
  • Restored decorative and fine art throughout the building
  • Professional conservation of 57 paintings
  • Extensive stencil work returning 1905 patterns and colors
  • Newly uncovered and restored skylights, historically-accurate glass front elevators and restored original furnishings
  • Cleaned, repaired and re-gilded Quadriga sculpture
  • Expanded dining in the basement level near the Rathskeller Cafe and a new grab-and-go lunch counter on the second floor (open during legislative session only)
  • Almost 40,000 square feet of new public gathering spaces including meeting rooms, working and relaxing spaces, and gallery space
  • New classrooms and tour center
  • ADA compliance

Some finishing work, as well as the installation and interpretation of some artworks, will continue in 2017, resulting in limited or no access to the roof and Quadriga, the west wing third floor and the north wing ground floor.
