Follow the Yellow Brick Road and see The Wizard of Oz at Children’s Theatre Company, playing now through June 14th, 2026!
One of my favorite movies growing up was The Wizard of Oz. I just adored Judy Garland and her expressive voice, how the beautiful friendship blossomed between her, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion and how the story ended on such a happy note! I have such fond memories watching it with my dad, requesting it again and again from the video rental store (IYKYK).
I was absolutely delighted when I heard Children’s Theatre Company was putting on The Wizard of Oz! I wasn’t sure what to expect– I had never seen the stage version.
I’m happy to report, without any spoilers, that the stage version closely follows the movie. Although you don’t need to have seen the movie to go on this amazing adventure of friendship and finding the true meaning of home. (My nine year old couldn’t remember the movie at all but kept up with the plot just fine!)
The Wizard of Oz is a story about Dorothy and her dog, Toto (yes a REAL dog is on stage!), finding their way back home. Following a tornado in Kansas, she gets thrown into the magical world of Oz, where witches, wizards and all kinds of creatures call it home. She forms friendships with a cast of characters she meets along the way– a scarecrow in need of a brain, a tin man searching for a heart and a lion who desperately needs courage. Their heartwarming journey teaches Dorothy the true meaning of home and family.
My son and I absolutely loved this show! The entire cast is amazing and it was fun to see veteran CTC actors in different roles. Reed Sigmund is perfect as a lovable but scared lion, Dean Holt truly brought the scarecrow to life and Autumn Ness as the Wicked Witch? Let’s just say– even I was scared! But in the best way!
The Wizard of Oz is best for all ages, but let me warn you– there were some frightening moments! CTC does a great job with their special effects, the tornado scene was epic! But if you have a kiddo with any sensory needs, I’d recommend one of the sensory friendly shows— Friday, May 29th at 7pm and Sunday, June 7th at 5pm.
The show runs 2 hours with one 15 minute intermission on the United Health Group Stage. There are such fun activities in the lobby this time around. Don’t miss the photo station complete with Wizard of Oz props! And they even have a custom T-Rex Cookie available for purchase at concessions– Over the Rainbow, featuring white chocolate, animal crackers and yellow M&Ms. Yummy!
