If you’re a fan of the Little House on the Prairie books or TV series and haven’t already visited Walnut Grove, Minnesota, July is a great time to do so!
Walnut Grove is the childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House on the Prairie books. The town hosts a free Family Festival which takes place on three Saturdays in July.
The fun takes place at Walnut Grove City Park from 11 am – 6 pm on July 10, 17, and 24. There are activities for all ages including demonstrations, food craft vendors, music performances, and more.
Girls ages 8-12 can register for the Laura-Nellie Look-A-Like Contest for some extra fun (be sure to dress up!).
You can also buy tickets to the Wilder Pageant which is held on those Saturdays as well as the preceding Fridays (July 9-10, 16-17, 23-24). The Wilder Pageant is a family-oriented outdoor drama with a live performance each night in a hillside amphitheater. Be sure to get your tickets ASAP if you’re planning to attend!
Another attraction to visit is the Ingalls Dugout Site for $7 per car. The home isn’t actually intact anymore, but you can see the deep depression in the ground and enjoy the sights and sounds that Laura would have seen during her family’s time on Plum Creek. Pack a picnic and enjoy!
For more visitor information, visit the Walnut Grove website.
