The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at the Ordway – Discount Tickets

Chances are if you have a kid in elementary school or middle school, you’ve heard of Percy Jackson and his adventures with the Greek gods. (I’m fairly certain that my son’s introduction to Greek mythology came from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series.) Treat your family to a night of music at the Ordway Center in St. Paul when The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical comes to town.

Tickets are available for $30 – $50 via Goldstar, plus service fees of $5.50 – $7.25 per ticket. (To compare, these tickets are normally $51 – $75, all fees included.) You can currently grab tickets for the following shows:

  • Tuesday, June 18th at 7:30 pm
  • Wednesday, June 19th at 7:30 pm
  • Thursday, June 20th at 7:30 pm
  • Friday, June 21st at 7:30 pm
  • Saturday, June 22nd at 2 pm
  • Saturday, June 22nd at 7:30 pm

Adapted from Rick Riordan’s bestselling YA book, this “electrifying” (Newsday) pop-rock musical finds Percy Jackson in hot water at school — again. But he’s got bigger fish to fry. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life, and he seems to have angered a few of them along the way. Now, young Percy and his newfound friends must race against the hourglass to solve the mystery of Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and set things right on Mount Olympus. Nominated for three Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, The Lightning Thief comes to the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in Saint Paul in a production deemed “worthy of the gods” by TimeOut New York.

Vikings Training Camp

I grew up in Mankato and remember going to many, many days of training camp. I’m a little sad for Mankato that training camp is no longer there, but I’m happy for those of us in the Twin Cities who are now more easily able to see training camp in progress.

Here’s what you need to know about training camp (yes, it’s FREE):

  • Daily fan attendance will be capped at 5,000 for each of the 16 days that are scheduled to be open to the public.
  • All tickets must be reserved in advance. There will be 4,000 free general admission tickets available and 1,000 reserved seats ($20) available each day.
  • Digital tickets are available at Vikings.com. Tickets and parking passes will be available on mobile devices only. You can download the free Vikings app which manages tickets and parking.
  • There is a 4-ticket maximum per fan and a limit of 2 days per fan.
  • More than 2,200 parking spaces will available on-site in the Northland Ford Dealers Parking Lot, but each must be purchased in advance. The cost to park is $10 in advance ($20 upon arrival), and you have an opportunity to purchase parking when reserving tickets (limit 1 parking pass for each ticket transaction).
  • *NEW for 2019* Daily autograph sessions with Vikings players will be available only for fans age 18 and under and will take place following practice at approximately 4:30 pm on the TCO Stadium concourse.

For more information, check out the Vikings Training Camp FAQ.

Lakeville Puppet Wagon

I have a larger family (five kids), so I’m always on the lookout for free and inexpensive events since admission costs can quickly add up. Bonus if we can be outside during the summer months!

One such attraction is the Lakeville Puppet Wagon, which not only is free, but is also something that moves around to various parks. Park hopping and puppets is the perfect combination for summer entertainment!

You can find a map of the locations as well as more information on the city website here.

The Adventure Park on the North Shore – Aerial Fun As Low As $19/Person

This sounds like a fun summer activity: take a jaunt up the North Shore and try out an Aerial Adventure Park experience! North Shore Adventure Park in Silver Bay is currently offering a discounted experience via Groupon.

You’ll enjoy a combined zip line and treetop climbing adventure, choosing from six aerial trails from beginner through advanced.

Options include:

  • $23 for Aerial Adventure Park Experience for One
  • $43 for Aerial Adventure Park Experience for Two – $21.50/person
  • $79 for Aerial Adventure Park Experience for Four – $19.75/person
  • $115 for Aerial Adventure Park Experience for Six – $19.17/person

This excursion is for adults and children ages 7 and older. Expect to spend about three hours there. They’ll hook you up with a safety harness and provide gloves and an interactive climber briefing. Closed-toed shoes or sneakers are required.

Climbing among the trees, one can’t help but feel in tune with nature. At The Adventure Park on The North Shore, eco-friendly courses designed by Swiss alpine mountaineers work with their natural surroundings rather than against it, encouraging an attitude of respect for the environment. While safely strapped into their harnesses, visitors swing, climb, and jump between platforms high above the ground. After hours, stringed lights illuminate the trees as climbers traverse the ropes under the moonlight. With color-coded courses for all skill levels, it’s a fun way to stay active and get in touch with the great outdoors.

Note that you’ll need to make an online reservation after you purchase your Groupon. Your ticket includes 40 minutes for a Safety Briefing & Harnessing session along with 2 hours of climbing in the trees.
