Newly Opened Can Can Wonderland: Cocktails and Mini-golf

Photo from Can Can Website

With names like State Fair, Squirrel Scrambler, Blue Toad and Gramma’s Living Room, how could mini golf not sound more fun? It sounds a bit like an indoor version of Alice in Wonderland mixed with Minnesota Landmarks and an artistic flair that everyone is sure to love.  The Newly Opened Can Can Wonderland: Cocktails and Mini-golf is located in the midway area of St. Paul, not too far from Hamline University. It just opened a couple of days ago and I am super excited to try it out!

Pricing, per round

$12 – 12 years of age and up

$9 – Under 12 years of age, 62 years of age and up, Veterans

Can Can Wonderland is a mini golf course. We didn’t design it though. We asked the mini golf enthusiasts of the world to do that. We sent out a call for artists asking “What is the mini golf hole you have always wanted to play?” We received over 200 proposals from all over the country and as far away as Australia. A jury of talented architects, visual artists, fabricators, and electrical engineers helped us select the 18 mini golf holes to be built for our course, and we believe they are spectacular!

What is Can Can Wonderland?

Located in St. Paul’s Hamline Midway neighborhood and the Creative Enterprise Zone, Can Can Wonderland combines art and play to create a one-of-a-kind arts immersive environment for people of all ages to enjoy.

We offer a truly unique, 18-hole artist designed, indoor mini golf course. But Can Can Wonderland isn’t just mini golf; it’s a wonderland full of arts-based fauna and flora for you to explore and delight in! Our boardwalk is full of attractions and amusements (created by/with artists). Our two stages offer a wide array of local and regional talents. We have a couple bars…we might have a secret bar! We have noshes! We even have a few unicorns.

Building History

The oldest part of our building dates back to 1889 with additions added multiple times through the 1970s. For many years, the American Can Company operated in this sprawling complex and manufactured metal food cans for Carnation, Campbell’s Soup, Del Monte, American National Can, and others. In 1999, they won Canmaker magazine’s “Can of the Year” award for their two-piece Spam can.

Our name is a nod to the history of the building as well as the French populist art movement, Can Can.

2016 Skyway Open

2016 Skyway Open

Downtown Minneapolis is known to have a great skyway system, which of course is super helpful in the winter.  The 2016 Skyway Open is a golf event that takes place in the skyway.  It starts tomorrow (Feb 26th)  and continues through the weekend.  I will admit, some of the options are a bit pricey, but they do offer some great family package prices, as well as some options that are a bit more thrifty during the day. Either way, the event benefits Intersections: Downtown 2025 Plan‘s Committee to End Street Homelessness, so any ticket is money well spent.  Take a look at all the ticket options and times available here.

Golfers are invited out to the three-day event, held on Friday, February  26, Saturday, February 27 and Sunday, February 28.

Big Stone Mini Golf & Sculpture Garden, Minnetrista

big stone golf 1

My husband and I ventured out for a date night last night and had a blast. Not a crazy loud concert or anything, but a quiet evening of mini golf and wandering through sculptures, even saw some goats and chickens. Our evening was at the Big Stone Mini Golf and Sculpture Garden, located near Minnestrista. Apparently this magical place has has been around for over 10 years but this was our first visit to it. Playing mini golf through the sculptures sort of felt like we were in the world of Alice in Wonderland. Although we went for a date night, we will be bringing our kids back as it is very kid friendly as well. There is a website here, but I highly recommend the FB page for more updated info on the time it is open etc. I don’t see the cost on the website but I wrote it down when we were there. Very reasonable : $8/adult, $7/child. We happened to be there for a special event that we saw on the FB page, and it included, dinner and an evening movie about Art in Nature. We had a great conversation with the owner Bruce, and sounds like he might try to do more events, so like the FB page as he will post on there. big stone golf flowers
