Showing of The Oscar® Nominated Short Documentaries

One of my favorite annual movie events is back again.  The 2019 Oscar® Nominated Short Documentaries will be showing at the Riverview Theater in south Minneapolis.  Each year, for just a brief time the Riverview shows the Oscar® Nominated Short Documentaries.  The select showings for 2019 starts Friday February 8th, and will continue for just a few days, the last showing is on February 14th. Only one showing per day beginning at 4:15.

The admission is a little higher than the typical $2 you pay at the Riverview.  For this event, tickets are $7 or $5 for students and seniors.  I don’t recommend bringing young kids.  Sometimes the content can be graphic and it’s a long time to sit with no breaks between films.

There’re five nominations, all shown in succession, bringing the viewing to around 3 hours.  Some years I have gone, not knowing anything about the nominations and decided to just be surprised.  Other years I’ve decided to read up a bit and have more of a background of what I would see.  I have to admit, I think I prefer to not know anything about them, just my preference though.  One of the friends that I was with, had done some lengthy research prior to the viewing.  Whatever you decide, I can promise you that these nominations will bring a wide array of emotions.  If you choose to read about the nominations you can do that here.

One of our favorite events starts next week.  The Omnifest, taking place at the Science Museum of Minnesota, begins January 4th-February 28th.  This is the 20th year for this fabulous event and each year the shows continue to amaze yes.  With five different films to choose from, there’s something for everyone.   You can purchase tickets in advance here on their website.

Our popular giant screen film festival returns to the Omnitheater, bringing five visitor favorites that will whisk you away on great adventures. Join in a shuttle mission to construct the International Space Station, ride shotgun in the Tornado Intercept Vehicle and chase after deadly storms, get a front row seat for the eruptions of some of the world’s most famous volcanoes, and much more.

Making this year’s fest even more special is the fact that the Science Museum – the largest museum-based producer of giant screen films – played a role in producing each film.

With a diverse film line-up that appeals to all ages and interests and a Minnesota tie to each film that can make each of us proud, Omnifest 2019 is an ideal destination this winter.

Three Upcoming Special Event Movies at Riverview Theater – Minneapolis

We’ve mentioned the Riverview Movie Theatre in Minneapolis before, a great place for inexpensive movies.  Occasionally they also have some special event movies.

We spotted three great events coming up soon.  The first is something new, the Adventure Film Festival.  It takes place this Thursday, November 15th. Enjoy the 2018 lineup of the best independent adventure films of the year.

Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music, a great film that the whole family can enjoy and yes even sing along with!.  Showing November 23-25 and again on December 1-2, advance tickets can be purchased here on their website.

The third special event show, although not for the whole family, should be quite popular – the Lord of the Rings Trilogy!  The Lord of the Rings event takes place December 30th and you can purchase advance tickets here on their website.

St Cloud Film Fest

What’s your favorite time of film to watch?  Documentary, action, science fiction or maybe comedy?  Check out the upcoming St Cloud Film Fest for a little bit of everything.  It takes place November 3th-10th.  This is the 8th year for the fest and it just keeps getting bigger and better each year.  The pass can be purchased online and it’s good for ALL 7 days.  There’s a great line up of films and you can find the entire schedule here.

The St Cloud Film Fest promotes film and filmmakers by creating opportunities for education, production, and appreciation during an annual festival and through year-long outreach.

The St Cloud Film Fest takes place over seven days in a historic theatre on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Eighth Grade Movie Advance Screening Thursday

Eighth Grade Elsie Fisher

You’re invited to a special “Parents Night Out” screening of Eighth Grade this Thursday! (And no, you don’t have to be a parent to attend the screening, but the movies is geared to those 17+, so the screening is not for kids.)

I saw the trailer for Eighth Grade last week and immediately thought four things:

  • I have to see this.
  • It’s going to make me laugh.
  • It’s going to make me cry.
  • This movie is going to be BIG!

Check out the trailer below and you’ll likely think similar thoughts:

About Eighth Grade: Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school — the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year — before she begins high school.

Eighth Grade is written and directed by Bo Burnham and stars Elsie Fisher, Josh Hamilton, Emily Robinson, and Jake Ryan.
